Hong Kong's First Recumbent Retail Shop

A lifestyle bike store in Hong Kong has opened up in March 2009 in Hong Kong, located at the junction of the major ShaTin-Taipo bike artery and the professional cycling training circuit. Our webstore is the first online bike shop in HK/Greater China. Our retail shop is the first bike shop in HK/China with a full selection of recumbent bikes and trikes. We offer a free rental for a day if the customer purchases a bike and cater to the busy professional with opening hours extending until late evening. We offer high-end trike and recumbent rentals for the curious or cyclists that want to go fast in comfort.

If you are interested in testing out any of our recumbent bikes, please contact us: sales@bikelements.com or go to Contact Us

Recumbent Bike Mathematics

The drag force on a recumbent at 50 kmph is only 10% of that from a regular bike, requiring much less effort to sustain. At higher speeds (35kmph and above), the wind resistance is much higher than the gravitational resistance; so that the higher weight of the recumbents is no longer a factor. At lower speeds when going uphills, the recumbent no longer has an aerodynamic advantage, but the feeling is akin to riding the Peak Tram.

What are Recumbent Bikes?

A recumbent bicycle/trike is a bicycle which places the rider in a seated or supine position (rarely, in a prone position). Recumbents hold the world speed record for a bicycle and were banned from international racing in 1934. The back of the rider is supported, and the rider's legs extend forward to pedals that are at about the same height as the seat. Steering is either above- or over-seat steering (ASS or OSS) using a handlebar in front of the rider, or under-seat steering (USS) using a handlebar under the seat. The wheels are often smaller and/or farther apart than on an upright bicycle. Recumbent riders hold world speed records for unpaced, human-powered vehicles with a peak speed of 130 kmph or 80 mph (compare this to the racing road bike with a peak speed of 70 kmph).

The easiest way to overcome wind resistance and reduce drag is to become more streamlined. In recumbent (speed bike) design, the cyclist pedals from a seated position, which gives the bicycle or trike a lower profile and makes it aerodynamically more efficient. Recumbent bicycles have been around for over 100 years and continue to be popular with engineers and cyclists interested in speed and comfort.

To all of you, from all of us at Velocity Racers - Thank you and Happy Biking!
